Experiments with opening images in TextEdit, randomly mixing up the code and saving them as images. When opened in photoshop, they looked different each time as the computer tried to make sense of the information. Reveals how temporary digital images can be, and as images are reproduced over networks, the endless compression/expand cycle means that they can be entirely different from the original.

MG: Firstly, what is your art background?

RA: I am currently in graduate school at RISD studying printmaking. I also like to get involved with different art projects on the Internet.

MG: Do you rely on the lo-fi nature of digital formats for your works aesthetic?

RA: No. I don't rely on working within a 'lo-fi' realm--at least I don't feel like I'm restricted into working within an aesthetic which seems 'lo-fi'. But I don't even consider my work (or the digital formats in which they exist) to be 'lo-fi' at all.

MG: Do you work from a concept, or does your work evolve naturally from experimentation?

RA: My work typically derives from experimenting with different processes, finding peculiarities along the way which interest me. Then I try to incorporate this newly-found (to me) inventory of visual discoveries into something more meaningful, through use of a narrative.

MG: Your work crosses over between film making and animation, like "the fourth luminous mystery". I really couldn't be sure if that is animation or film, how did you make it?

RA: I recorded a live session of me interacting with a virtual scene I built in some 2-D physics software. I played it back in a different piece of web cam software, which allowed me to overlay a duplicate of the scene on top of itself to produce a feedback loop. From there, I recorded the activity on my screen with a digital camera--in sort of a Scanimate-style fashion. I was hoping the end result would have a feel reminiscent to the analogue computer imagery of the 70s-80s.. a period in computer animation which I like very much.

MG: Finally, out of the other computersclub contributors, whose work do you like the best?

Got a load of films developed from trip to Ireland in December, and trip to Scotland last month. Used a nice point and shoot I picked up from deptford market for ireland photos and used my Canon EOS3000, a modernish film SLR which can use digital lenses. Beaut. Rest on FLICKR

A star appears over San Francisco and a new gizmo is born. The iPad! At first glance it resembles an iPhone in unhandy, non-pocket-sized form. But look a little longer, and . . Nope. You were right first time.

Not that that's necessarily a bad thing. Apple excels at taking existing concepts – computers, MP3 players, conceit – and carefully streamlining them into glistening ergonomic chunks of concentrated aspiration. It took the laptop and the coffee table book and created the MacBook. Now it's taken the MacBook and the iPhone and distilled them into a single device that answers a rhetorical question you weren't really asking.

It's an iPhone for people who can't be arsed holding an iPhone up to their face. A slightly-further-away iPhone that keeps your lap warm. A weird combination of portable and cumbersome: too small to replace your desktop, too big to fit in your pocket, unless you're a clown. It can play video, but really – do you want to spend hours staring at a movie in your lap? Sit through Lord of the Rings and you'd need an osteopath to punch the crick out of your neck afterwards. It can also be used as an ebook, something newspapers are understandably keen to play up, but because it's got an illuminated display rather than a fancy non-backlight "digital ink" ebook screen, it'll probably leave your eyes feeling strained, as though your pupils are wearing tight shoes.

The iPad falls between two stools – not quite a laptop, not quite a smartphone. In other words, it's the spork of the electronic consumer goods world. Or rather it would be, were it not for one crucial factor: it looks ideal for idly browsing the web while watching telly. And I suspect that's what it'll largely be used for. Millions of people watch TV while checking their emails: it's a perfect match for them.

Absurdly, Apple keeps trying to pretend it'll make your life more efficient. Come off it. It's an oblong that lights up. I'm sick of being pitched to like I'm a one-man corporation undertaking a personal productivity audit anyway. I don't want to hear how the iPad is going to make my life simpler. I want to hear how it'll amuse and distract me; how it plans to anaesthetise me into a numb, trancelike state. Call it the iDawdler and aggressively market it as the world's first utterly dedicated timewasting device: an electronic sedative to rival diazepam, alcohol or television. If Apple can convince us of that, it's got itself a hit.

Some people are complaining because it doesn't have a camera in it. Spoiled techno-babies, all of them. Just because something is technically possible, it doesn't mean it has to be done. It's technically possible to build an egg whisk that makes phonecalls, an MP3 player that dispenses capers or a car with a bread windscreen. Humankind will continue to prosper in their absence. Not everything needs a 15-megapixel lens stuck on the back, like a little glass anus. Give these ingrates a camera and they'd whine that it didn't have a second camera built into it. What are you taking photographs of anyway? Your camera collection?

And don't bring up videocalls to defend yourself: it'd be creepy talking to a disembodied two-dimensional head being held at arm's length, and besides, the iPad is too heavy to hold in front of your face for long, so you'd end up balancing it in your lap, which means both callers would find themselves staring up one another's others nostrils, like a pair of curious dental patients. (Videocalls are overrated anyway. You just sit there staring at each other with nothing to say. It's like a prison visit: eventually one of you has to start masturbating just to break the tension.)

Personally, I'm not sure whether I'll buy an iPad, although I think – I think – I'm about to buy a MacBook. Yes, I was a dyed-in-the-wool Mac sceptic for years. Yes, I've written screeds bemoaning the infuriating breed of smug Apple monks who treat all PC owners with condescending pity. But being chained to a Sony Vaio for the last few weeks has convinced me that I'd rather use a laptop that just works, rather than one that's so ponderous, stuttering and irritating I find myself perpetually on the verge of running outside and hurling it into traffic. (That's a moan about Sony laptops, not PCs in general, by the way. I'm keeping my desktop PC, thanks: that's lovely. Smooth as butter. Better than I deserve, in fact.)

I just hope buying a MacBook won't turn me into an iPrick. I want a machine that essentially makes itself invisible, not a rectangular bragging stone. If, 10 minutes after buying it, I start burbling on about how it's left me more fulfilled as a human being, or find myself perched at a tiny Starbucks table stroking its glowing Apple with one hand while demonstratively tapping away with the other in the hope that passersby will assume I'm working on a screenplay, it's going straight in the bin.

Browser art

Browser art is a sub-genre of Net art and relates specifically to a renegade artwork made as part of an URL, that uses the computer as raw material, transforming the codes, the structure of the websites and the links between servers into visual material. Some Browser artworks automatically connect to the Internet and then proceed to mangle the web pages by reading the computer’s ‘code’ the wrong way. The duo Joan Hermskerk and Dirk Paesmans, known as Jodi, have devised a program which the Net art writer Tilman Baumgärtel has described as transforming a PC ‘into an unpredictable, terrifying machine that seems to have a life of its own’. Other artists, like the British based duo Tom Corby and Gavin Baily, reduce image-rich web pages to stark white text and the American artist Maciej Wisniewski has developed a browser that transforms the interactive experience of surfing the net into a passive activity, staring at floating images and texts. Michael Landy was part of the Young British Artists (alongside Emin, Hirst, Hume and all those savvy goldsmith alumni who make shit loads of money for telling the art world to 'go f**k themselves') and is most famous for his installation in 2001, Breakdown, in which he literally destroyed everything he owned. Not an uncommon concept, as Franciscan monks will give up everything they own for spiritual purpose, as will Bhuddist monks. Never the less, this was a well publicised 'is it art?' fiasco which earned him a lot of attention. Right now, Landy has set up an installation in the SLG (south london gallery) called the 'Art Bin' for which he has invited anyone to submit their 'artistic failures' to be thrown into a 130000 gallon perspex skip for all to see. So far a lot of his contemporaries, including Hirst and Emin, have thrown their 'art crap' in, alongside the less heard of you and me. This whole method of destruction as a form of transformation I find quite fascinating, as it throws aesthetic aside for process, and creates a kind of levelling. The only decision needed making is from either Landy himself, or an assistant that decides whether the piece in question is enough of a 'failure' to go in.

Digital Environments Evaluation

This was an area I was already interested in before the electives, and doing it got me interested further in the subject.
Over the course of the elective, it struck me how much there really was to discuss, and how our discussions more often spilled over into philosophy, sociology, politics and culture. The digital seems to cross over in many areas, which for me, makes it an extremely important and challenging subject.
The first couple of weeks saw to discover why it is important to discuss theory, in any art practice. This led me to think about my own practice in graphic design, and how design theory is important in understanding why we choose to make things look certain ways. Like digital, it seems to cross over philosophy, sociology, politics and culture. Everything we do is connected. We were also set the task to give our own definition of digital quite early on, which seemed easy first, but when you start to really try and pin down what digital is, it becomes increasingly difficult to define.
In the fifth week, Keir Williams, Chris Poolman and Jonnet Middleton joined us; fine artists whose work has been influenced by digital technologies. I felt this was a weak point in the elective, as it was only very loosely based on digital and most of the time was dedicated to discussing their ‘Unity Panda’ project. The strongest thing they had to talk about was the Internet/Youtube comment relationship that sparked from an email from an artist who claimed they had stolen his ideas, and they started to deliberately re-appropriate his ideas to hear his responses.
A high point was when we watched and discussed lectures by Clay Shirky, who made two lectures, one in 2007 and one in 2009 about collaboration and the argument for and against open source services. It was amazing how much had changed between these 2 years, it made me realise how things like Flickr and Facebook have been such new things, yet it feels like they have been around since I even knew about the Internet. I believe out of all the discussions we have had over the elective, the Internet has been the strongest subject.
What does Digital create the possibility for? ‘Two brains are better than one’ is a well-known saying. Digital lets thousands upon thousands of minds link, to share thoughts, ideas, images, experiences, sounds, and literature, almost anything. There are online market places, hundreds of archives of anything. What I find compelling is the duality it has. It can be beautiful and ugly. The digital reflects us, and in some ways will be an archetypal extension of our species. Our complexity is a derivative of communication. The brain creates millions of synapses and links everyday and millions are destroyed. The more and more connections that can be made and the quicker and easier it will be to share information over the globe, there will be an awakening for our species. Digital environments make the impossible possible.

"The most progressive U.S. President in a generation comes to the most important international meeting since the Second World War and delivers a speech so devoid of substance that he might as well have made it on speakerphone from a beach in Hawaii. His aides argue in private that he had no choice, such is the opposition on Capitol Hill to any action that might challenge the dominance of fossil fuels in American life. And so the nation which put a man on the moon can’t summon the collective will to protect men and women back here on Earth from the consequences of an economic model and lifestyle choice that has taken on the mantel of a religion.
Then a Chinese Premier who is in the process of converting his Communist nation to that new faith (high-carbon consumer capitalism) takes such umbrage at Obama’s speech that he refuses to meet – refuses, in fact, to do much of anything beyond sulking in his hotel room, as if this were a teenager’s house party instead of a final effort to stave off the breakdown of our biosphere.
Late in the evening the two men meet and cobble together a collection of paragraphs which they call a ‘deal’, although in reality it has all the meaning and authority of a bus ticket, not that it stops them affixing their signatures to it with great solemnity. Obama’s team then briefs the travelling White House press pack – most of whom, it seems, understand about as much about global climate politics as our own lobby hacks know about baseball – and before we know it the New York Times and CNN are declaring the birth of a ‘meaningful’ accord.
Meanwhile a friend on an African delegation emails to say that he and many fellow members of the G77 block of developing countries are streaming into the corridors after a long discussion about the perilous state of the talks, only to see Obama on the television announcing that the world has a deal. It’s the first they’ve heard about it, and a few minutes later, as they examine the text, they realise very quickly that it effectively condemns their continent to a century of devastating temperature rises.
By now the European leaders – who know this thing is a farce but have to present it to their publics as progress – have their aides phoning the directors of civil society organisations spinning that the talks have been a success. A success? This deal crosses so many of the red lines laid out by Europe before this summit started that there are scarlet skid marks across the floor of the Bella Centre, and one honest European diplomat tells us this is a ‘shitty shitty deal.’
Quite.
This deal is beyond bad. It contains no legally binding targets and no indication of when or how they’ll come about. There isn’t even a declaration that the world will aim to keep global temperature rises below 2 degrees C – instead leaders merely ‘recognise the science’ behind that vital threshold, as if that were enough to prevent us crossing it. The only part of this deal anyone sane came close to welcoming was the $100bn global climate fund, but it’s now becoming apparent that even that’s largely made up of existing budgets, with no indication of how new money will be raised and distributed so poorer countries can go green and adapt to climate change.
Not all of our politicians deserve the opprobrium of a dismayed world. Our own Ed Miliband fought hard on no sleep for a better outcome, while President Lula of Brazil offered to financially assist other developing countries to cope with climate change and put a relatively bold carbon target on the table. But the EU didn’t move on its own commitment (one so weak we’d actually have to work hard not to meet it) while the United States offered nothing and China stood firm.
Before the talks began I was of the opinion that we would only know Copenhagen was a success when plans for new coal-fired power stations across the developed world were dropped. If the giant utilities saw in the outcome of Copenhagen an unmistakable sign that governments were now determined to act, and that coal plants this century would be too expensive to run under the regime agreed at this meeting, then this summit would have succeeded. Instead, as the details of the agreement emerged last night we received reports of Japanese opposition MPs popping champagne corks as they savoured the possible collapse of their new government’s carbon targets. It’s not just that we haven’t got to where we needed to be, we’ve actually ceded huge ground. There is nothing in this deal – nothing – that would persuade an energy utility that the era of dirty coal is over. And the implications for humanity of that simple fact are profound.
I know we greens are partial to hyperbole. We use language as a bludgeon to direct attention to the crisis we’re facing, and you’ll hear much more of it in the coming days and weeks. But really, it’s no exaggeration to describe the outcome of Copenhagen as an historic failure that will live in infamy. In a single day, in a single space, a spectacle was played out in front of a disbelieving audience of people who have read and understood the stark warnings of humanity’s greatest scientific minds - and what they witnessed was nothing less than the very worst instincts of our species articulated by the most powerful men who ever lived.
I will leave the last word to the late Kurt Vonnegut Jr., who would have given voice to the insanity of Copenhagen better than I ever could, and whose poem Requiem is perhaps appropriate at this moment: ‘When the last living thing, has died on account of us, how poetical it would be if Earth could say, in a voice floating up, perhaps from the floor of the Grand Canyon, “It is done. People did not like it here”
